After much research I note that the emachine is prone to over heating. But this machine I am working on right now is a complicated one. Not only does the machine over heat it appears very very slow. I performed the following :
Format hard drive and installed Windows 7
Format hard drive and installed Vista Premium
Reseated and applied new thermal paste to CPU and GPU
Both operating systems were very very slow and kept crashing. Running CRCDISK on reboot the machine hangs at 13% every time so it's pointing to a hard drive issue.
I am just installing an old 80GB hard drive I had laying around, installing Win 7.

iphone 3gs downgraded and unlocked
Over the weekend I was working on an iphone 3gs which was running ios 5.0.1. I installed the ipad baseband to unlock by after installing Ultrasn0w I was stuck with no signal or no service. I tried everything, including installing the ultrasn0w patch but still nothing. I jailbroke and unlocked the phone several times and flashed the baseband several times but I just could not get past the no service message.
So I stitched the saved SHSH blob for 4.1 which I had (stitched using latest version of Redsn0w) and took the phone back to ios 4.1. I then jailbroke the phone and successfully unlocked it, now we have a signal, yipee!
The ongoing problems with a the 3gs 5.0.1 unlock with no service is well documented but nobody seems to have come up with a definitive answer to the problem yet! So for anyone still having ios 5.0.1 no service, my definitive answer is to roll the firmware back to ios 4.1 and then jailbreak and unlock.

iphone 3gs battery wont charge and keeps switching on and off
This is a different 3gs to the one described earlier today. I attempted a restore in itunes and got error 29, which is usually a battery issue or hardware. I swapped the battery with two different batteries (when I say different I mean the APN number was different) but I have a 3gs that boots to ios then switches off.
Plugged in to the mains charger the phone reports that the battery is charging but it isn't!
I am now looking closely for any damage to the logic board.

Apple iphone 3gs on 5.0.1 firmware with 05.12.01 Baseband no signal
Ok this one had me seriously stuck last night and pretty much all day yesterday. It was a 3gs 16gb which I had rebuilt from scratch, new rear case, new front screen assembly, new battry and new power ribbon flex. It was originally running ios 3.1.3 on baseband 05.12.01. So I downloaded original IOS 5.0.1 and used latest version of Redsn0w to jailbreak the device. It went well, no problems. The I used Ultrasn0w within Cydia to unlock the phone. And that was when the issue started, the phone would recognise my sim card but would keep loosing the signal every 10-20 seconds! I re-jailbroke, resinstalled ultrasn0w, reinstalled mobile substrate, everything and nothing worked.
I did seriously contemplate installing the ipad baseband but thankfully decided not to, heed the warning on Redsn0w about your serial number and installing ipad baseband.
Anyway eventually I went back to the good old faithful Sn0wbreeze (latest version) and although it does keep my signal for longer, I do still keep loosing the signal from time to time.
The problem has been a real difficult one to conquer, but I will spend today working on it to try and fix. I will post my progress here later :(

Acer Aspire 5735 Laptop Repair
I am currently working on the above laptop. Laptop has a virus and a very noisy fan. Started work today by reinstalling Windows Vista using the recovery console. To access the recovery console on an Acer 5735 first go in to the BIOS (F2 at start up) and ensure that recovery partition is enabled.
Now when you reboot you will see the option at the bottom of the screen to start recovery console. Once started the machine reinstalls Vista from the built-in recovery partition (takes about an hour).
It took a little while to update all the hardware drivers, but the Acer has built-in driver update software so it automates the updating of drivers (takes about an hour).
